An FKMAD parent can usually relate to the following scenario:
Your family is at a store or other public place and your child starts having a difficult time. Maybe your child gets upset by the noise and activity, starts crying for no apparent reason, starts talking in a loud voice, or gets angry and lashes out. There are a lot of ways this can play out and almost every one one of us has been there.
Most of us have also experienced looks or comments from strangers (does "give me that child for a week and I'll teach him!" or "that child just needs a spanking" sound familiar?). As a parent, we are already feeling worn out, and simply want to help our child gain control and focus. Something not so nice may cross our face or come out of our mouths, though, and we leave the situation feeling general negativity. The person who made the look or comment certainly doesn't gain any understanding or sympathy, either.
An Awareness Card can be kept handy by parents. If you find yourself in one of these situations, you can use your "voice" (the card) to positively respond to someone, without actually saying a thing. You can keep your energy on helping your child. The person who made the comment can gain awareness of what is going on, and possibly even find out more or how to help the next time they encounter one of our special children.
Positive parental response, spreading awareness, educating the community - turning what can be negative into something positive!
Cards are business sized, full color on front and black and white on back. Each includes a statistic, signs of what anxiety disorders or mood disorders may look like in children/teens, ways to help and how to find out more information.
Support yourself, your child, your community and our common goal of raising awareness!
