Recognizing the Sometimes Hidden Treasures of a Special Needs Family
Do any of the following sound like your child?
  • Doesn't give up when given an answer he doesn't like, is very persistent
  • Does not seem to be as interested in what is "popular" with peers; has interest in things some people may think are "weird" for their age
  • Seems to not listen or pay attention a lot of times, but then can remember the smallest details about something that caught their attention, like a holiday decoration or a favorite tv show
  • Our special needs children have many things in common, things that may be interpreted as peculiar to some. We are going to explore how these things can in fact be great gifts, and how we can better accept our children just as they are. By doing so, we can help steer others into being more accepting which opens the door for our children being comfortable with their unique selves. One fantastic thing about our children - they are very interesting! When is the last time you had a "boring" week?
